"Indigo Magazine is a platform that showcases new voices from Southeast Asian arts and beyond. We believe in looking to the arts to shed light on the nuances of the region and create new narratives. We believe in promoting emergent voices who generate change in Southeast Asian societies.
It began with a group of friends concerned with getting their stories heard, frustrated at the lack of platforms to showcase new artists in Southeast Asian arts and culture. Certain topics would recur: the wars, exoticism, questions of identity. We wanted a magazine to address these topics, but also move away from the nostalgic, romantic lens through which Southeast Asia is viewed. Contemporary arts and culture in the region is not merely developing, it is thriving.
We launched our magazine in the summer of 2018, and have since published two issues. The first, themed 'Movement', looked back at our history to charge forward with new narratives. The second, themed 'Cities', launched in the summer of 2019, was as much an invitation to explore the steel infrastructures and concrete socio-cultural structures in which we live as it was to explore ourselves."
